JKCS PARENT UPDATE

|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
February 16, 2012
Happy belated Valentine's Day to you! Were you treated well? Did you feel appreciated?
That special day fits in well with our school theme. "The Lord has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love His brother (and sister)" 1 John 4:21. Our celebration of love continues. We are in the middle of planning special surprises from one class to another in the building, as an expression of our love for others. While that is a great thing to do, this week I thought about another aspect of love that sometimes we neglect to discuss.
Have you ever thought about love being expressed as a law or a boundary in an effort to express love? When my older brother was young, he was placed in a harness and attached with a rope to our backyard clothesline. The reason for that action was that my active brother demonstrated a tendency to wander, and my parents were concerned that his next playground would be the street in front of our house. What a demonstration of love. My parents didn't want my brother to get hurt; however, my brother was not impressed with that demonstration of love.
There are many other examples of laws and practices that confine people, but at the same time demonstrate love and concern. Parents often impose things that children may not appreciate. Bed time, snack time, screen time are all examples of parental decisions which may not be popular with the children.
Let's remind ourselves that not all people are excited about the consequences of love. Let's remind ourselves that it is the heart that matters. Let's remind ourselves that sometimes love hurts emotionally.
May you as parents be assured that the love you express today that may not be popular with your children will be recalled with fondness once your children are adults. Blessings to you as you love your children.
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma

NEWS
World Education Games
JKCS would like to introduce you to the "World Education Games", organized by 3PLearning. This is the same organization that provided the Mathletics Competition in the fall. It is an online event where students in particular categories compete against other students across the globe in specific subject areas.
On March 6, 7 and 8, there will be an opportunity for students from ages 4-13 years old to participate in a three events, "World Spelling Day," World Maths Day" and World Science Day," respectively.
JKCS students are given the opportunity to register and participate in these games during class time. However, prior to their participation in these events, students are asked to start practicing online at a minimum of 10 hours at home. Students will log their hours on a log sheet, then give the sheet to Mrs. Schuurman.
If you are interested, please check the website at www.worldeducationgames.com for more information.
Here's what you need to do:
- 1) Student or parent has to contact to Mrs. Schuurman (pschuurman@jkcs-oakville.org)
- 2) Student attends an information meeting at school to receive a permission form and log sheet.
- 3) Practice 10 hours at home before the first event.
- 4) Fill out permission form and fill out log sheet. Hand these in to Mrs. Schuurman
Registration is done by the school. Cost is free.
Lobby Project Thank You's
We wanted to say a HUGE thank you to both Martin Smit and Jim DeHoog for their hard work in installing 3 monitors in our lobby as the first phase in updating our lobby look! These two gentlemen give tirelessly of their free time to benefit our wonderful school, and we want to say publically how grateful we are to them for their all efforts over the years.
Martin also wanted us to mention that Kristen, an employee at Best Buy in Oakville was very generous to our school when we made some additional purchases for the lobby. If you happen to be shopping there, please mention your thanks to a staff member or management for their support.
Our lobby is slowly taking shape. The monitors on the wall will display our current school life - which has so much packed into it, it needs to be presented on an ever-changing set of monitors! Look for some frames to appear on our history wall next!
Tues. Feb. 21 is like a FRIDAY
Stay with me on this one, but to make sure we cover all the academic subjects for an equal amount of time in the school year, there will be a few "pretend" or "adjustment" days in our school calendar this year.
So... this Tues. Feb. 21 will be "like" a Friday but ONLY in terms of the class schedule for the day. Subs will still be served for lunch on Tuesday as usual, however the CLASSES that normally happen on Friday will happen on Tuesday. At the end of the week, the classes that normally happen on Friday will happen AGAIN on Friday. It's like having 2 Fridays in a week schedule-wise.
Also... if your child normally has gym or music on a Friday - don't forget to send those gym clothes or instruments (including recorders).
This day switch will NOT affect activities outside the curriculum like: Dance & Tambourine Club or Piano Lessons.
If you are confused, please contact the office for clarification: office@jkcs-oakville.org or (905) 829-8048 x0
This change means that our PART-TIME kindergarten students WILL COME TO SCHOOL ON TUES. FEB. 21 (These are the students that normally only come to school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.)
Bowl-a-thon Progress
Great Work JKCS! You collected $4,632 in Bowl-a-thon pledges this week!

These same students received Wii bowl play time during one of their recess breaks. They are getting ready for the big day, March 2nd!

-
Junior: Mrs. Heeringa/Mr. Fledderus class $604

Every pledge makes a difference. Thank you for supporting your child and our JKCS community. Let us thank our Lord for this fun opportunity and for the privilege of working together to help meet the needs of our school.

Candy Apples A Hit!
Your Candy Apple orders were sent home with our students on Valentine's Day, we trust you and your loved ones enjoyed these wonderful sweet treats.
It took us two days to complete 175 apples this year. We had a wonderful time in the kitchen sharing stories, recipes and connecting with one another. A big thank you to our volunteers and especially to the Lewarne family for organizing this event. We also wish to thank them and the Saufl family for their food donations. Their support helped keep our costs down and we were blessed with the top quality products they provided. Thank you, your contribution contributed to JKCS earning more and providing a quality gourmet apple for many to enjoy.
A big thank you to all of you who supported this fundraiser by purchasing candy apples for your friends, family and loved ones. We raised over $1200 because of your orders. P.S. Sorry to all of you who have asked if we have any left, we hope some of you did share
Servant Team - Food Needed for Kerr St. Breakfast
The Servant Team is getting ready for their Feb. event. On Feb. 25, we will be serving breakfast to Kerr Street clients. It is an exciting morning for us as we serve them restaurant style. The menus are on the table and the students actually take their orders and then bring it to them minutes later. The clients are so appreciative and it gives us all joy to serve them. The parents do all the cooking in the kitchen. We all make a great team!!
We need the school to help provide the food.
There will be a table in the foyer for you to drop off the food until Feb. 23rd. We appreciate it so much.

Last Week for JKCS Marketing Survey - IN your INBOX!

The survey is now IN your INBOX! Thank you so much to all the parents who have already responded! We would love to have more responses though. If you haven't completed a survey yet, please click on this link below to complete your survey. It's fast, it's easy and it's CONFIDENTIAL! (And I will love you for it!)
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JKCS
This year we have a new PR (Public Relations) & Marketing Committee comprised of talented and dedicated parents. This committee is doing an absolutely wonderful job helping me (Jennifer Bergner) to more effectively get the word out to our various communities about JKCS!
As part of this new mandate, our PR committee would like to ask current parents and graduate parents a few quick CONFIDENTIAL questions about their experiences at JKCS.
So please look at your email inbox for a brief 17 question survey that you can fill out on your computer in a few minutes. The link will come through "Survey Monkey".
We would really appreciate your input on this survey! Thanks in advance for your honest answers.

Have a wonderful extra long week! Make you share some wonderful memorable moments with your family on Monday.
Star of the Week: Aidan Monday: Family Day-No School Tuesday: FRIDAY SCHEDULE, ALL JK'S ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND, Free Dress day for those who brought in their bowl-a-thon pledges last Friday. Wednesday: Bring in an object that starts with letter l sounds Friday: Teddy Bear Picnic Day, send in your favourite teddy bear for the day, Free Dress day for those who brought in their bowl-a-thon pledges. Bowl-A-Thon: remember to return your pledge sheets. Our class is doing fantastic, keep up the great work! So far our class has raised $425 Star of the Week Round 2: Each of the students will have another opportunity to be the star of the week again. A new letter explaining what has to be prepared at home will come home at the beginning of the month your child will be the start. Good Behavior Game: I have introduced the class to a new game. Many of the students are struggling to follow our class rules of "We share, we care & we cooperate." To help instill these rules we are now playing a game with them. The students have been divided into 3 teams. I review the rules with the students daily and set a time of when we will play the game (we start small intervals 20 mins, it will increase in time and then be expected to be all times). While the game is taking place the students are expected to follow all the rules of the game. If a student does not follow the rule, that team will receive a tally mark. Each team is allowed to get a maximum of 4 tally marks during the duration of the game. At the end of game time, the team(s) with the least amount of tally marks wins. They will receive a reward. At the end the week the team that has won the most will earn a special privilege. To learn more about The Good Behaviour Game check it out on Youtube.com "Channel 9 Good Behavior Game" or "Pax Good Behaviour Game". This was just in the news recently.

Grade 1a - Mrs. Reckman
Wow, what a week! We had a great time spreading the love on Tuesday for Valentine's Day. On Wednesday we celebrated 100 Days of School in grade 1 with many different activities. We also enjoyed spending time with the pastors and singing for them on Wednesday afternoon.
We've finished our unit on "long a" words in our phonics and word wall words and are moving on to word with "long i". Look for "long i" words at home and practice saying and spelling them together! In Creation Studies we've begun learning about the people in God's wonderful world who live in the country of Kenya! If you have any resources related to Kenya that you'd like to share with us, please let me know! Next week we'll be back to "normal", after many extra-special days in the past few weeks. Whew!
May you have a fun, restful and safe Family Day long weekend!
Accelerated Reader: We have come to the end of Term 2 so please note that any AR tests taken from this point on will count toward each student's Term 3 AR goals. Way to go, super readers! Memory Work: No memory work test this Tuesday due to the short week! Next week's memory work: "God began by making one man. From him came all the different people who live everywhere in the world. He decided exactlywhen and where they must live. Acts 17:16-27 Reading Words (practice at home): things good down came have Spelling Words (study for Friday's spelling test): call car find now who dice twice mice nice rice ride side hide tide wide Pants Mix-up: Olamide has been missing his pants from Mc Carthy's (size 6) His name on the inside seam in a label. Olamide brought home instead an older Mc Carthy pants with the name J Patterson writen in ink. This switch probably occured during last Friday's gym class. Could you all please check your pants at home to see if you can find the missing pants? Thanks. Bowl-a-thon: Remember to bring in those Bowl-a-thon pledge forms for Friday!

Grade 1b - Mrs. Boom
Wow we have quite a busy week! Valentine's Day was a lot of fun celebrating Jesus' love for us and each other! The 100 Day posters were terrific! We all loved our100 trail mixes and made wonderful 100 Day hats! We ended the day with cake and the movie 101 Dalmatians!
This week we also took a tour of the villages in the mountains in Mexico and realized how blessed we all are with our modern day conveniences. We picked reeds with Maria to make baskets to sell. We then went on a tour of a very busy city called Guadalajara and enjoyed the open air markets on the sidewalks and delivered newspapers with Jose!
Monday, February 20: No School. Family Day Tuesday, February 22: Friday schedule-return library books (even though we will not have library) Friday, February 24: No Spelling and Memory work due to the short week. Pants Mix-up: Olamide has been missing his pants from Mc Carthy's (size 6) His name on the inside seam in a label. Olamide brought home instead an older Mc Carthy pants with the name J Patterson writen in ink. This switch probably occured during last Friday's gym class. Grade 2a - Mrs. Schuurman & Mrs. Panza
We had a wonderful Valentine's Day this past week. Thank you to Mrs. Rizzuto-Willan for coming in and sharing nut-free cupcakes with the class. Thank you, also, to all of you for sharing and showing love to all of us, including the teachers who were spoiled with chocolates, notes and hugs!
We had an exciting time sneaking up on the Grade 7/8 class this week and surprising them during their math class. As part of "Grade Switch", our Grade 2 class blessed the Grade 7/8 class with a bowl of ice cream and a special card to show them our love for them. In keeping with the theme of the month, Mrs. Panza had organized this special event for the two classes. Our Grade 2 class showed a servant heart!
Thank you to Aidan for sharing his poster and his favourite things this past week. Our Special Person of the week continues the following week, not next week.
Keep up the fundraising for the Bowl-a-thon. We have an extra long weekend to make those calls and requests. Thanks for your hard work!

Bowl-a-thon: Remember to bring in those Bowl-a-thon pledge forms for Friday!
