JKCS PARENT UPDATE
|
|
|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
February 3, 2012
Happy February to you! We are supposed to be in the middle of snow, talking about the possibility of a snow day, and longing for the summer to come quickly because of the cold winter months.
While those items are not the way they usually are, there is another item that remains the same no matter what the weather looks like.
Have you noticed all the cards about love and Valentine's Day in the stores? Some people are fond of Valentines's Day and buy gifts for each other which can include chocolate, jewellery, and flowers. Other people rebel at the thought of a "Hallmark Holiday" that promotes spending more money on cards and other items.
I am pleased to report that we will focus on the topic of love at John Knox this month. Our theme verse for this month is taken from 1 John 4:21 which states, "And He has given us this command: whoever loves God must love his brother" (and sister).
Our teachers will talk about that theme during their class time. We will talk about it during our Monday morning chapel times. We will also play a game that allows our classes to bless one another through a surprise act of love.
The difference between Valentine's Day and our monthly theme of love is that the Lord calls us to love each day again and not just on one day. He is in the business of restoring relationships and extended His grace and love to us on a regular basis.
Don't get me wrong, to use a day to appreciate those I love is a good thing. The people in charge of our chocolate candy apple fundraiser can attest to the fact that I have taken good care of my wife! I just need to ensure that it is done every day in ways that not only include things but also words and actions.
As you live this month with your children, ask them about our theme. Unpack aspects of God's love for us and our love for each other and what that looks like. We look forward to working with you as we show our children what it means to love.
How will you show your love to others this month?
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

Last Wednesday at our Spirit day assembly, we shared the details of this fun event with our students. They are excited to get the ball rolling! Our students will help raise funds for their school by collecting pledges and earning great incentives.
Friday February 3rd each student received a fundraising package to take home. Each package includes four weeks of pledge forms and lots of information regarding our incentives and activities for the next four weeks.
Please be sure to check your child's back pack to find out how your child can earn a free dress day, Wii bowling play time and class incentives.
Pledge forms due every Friday starting Friday February, 10th.
Expand your territory and have friends or family donate on-line. All you need to do is include the details on your pledge form!
Thanking you in advance for helping us make this a fun and successful fundraiser for our students and JKCS community.
Re-Enrollment Forms PAST DUE for 34 Families
![forms[1]](http://www.jkcs-oakville.org/media/com_acymailing/resized/forms%5B1%5Dthumb150x150.jpg)
The deadline for returning your RE-ENROLLMENT FORMS for the next school year has passed.
We received an impressive number of promptly returned forms, however... we are still short 34 forms. This number is too high for us to begin work on budgeting and projecting, so PRETTY PLEASE, WITH SUGAR ON TOP, SEND IN THOSE FORMS WITH A POSTDATED CHEQUE FOR $750 IN ASAP!
If we don't receive forms, we may have to put you on the naughty list! I don't want to sound dramatic, but you really don't want to be on the naughty list!! (We call, pop by your house, stay for dinner, sleep over, eat all the ice cream from your fridge until we get those forms!)
Click HERE for the Re-enrollment forms. They are also available on the website under "News" and "Downloads" along with all the other school forms you might need.
If you have a confidential matter that is preventing you from returning your form, please contact Tamara Dempster at: 905 829-8048 x225 or tdempster@jkcs-oakville.org to discuss in strict confidence.
Marketing Survey - Coming Soon to your INBOX
This year we have a new PR (Public Relations) & Marketing Committee comprised of talented and dedicated parents. This committee is doing an absolutely wonderful job helping me (Jennifer Bergner) to more effectively get the word out to our various communities about JKCS!
As part of this new mandate, our PR committee would like to ask current parents and graduate parents a few quick CONFIDENTIAL questions about their experiences at JKCS.
So please watch your email inbox for a brief 17 question survey that you can fill out on your computer in a few minutes. The link will come through "Survey Monkey".
We would really appreciate your input on this survey! Thanks in advance for your honest answers.
Feedback on new GIFTS program
This year, we are incredibly indebted to Mrs. Tina Rizzuto-Willan and Mrs. Cindy Durham and their committee for all their long hours and hard work in crafting a new GIFTS volunteer program.
At this point in the year, the committee is reviewing the program and would love your input. Constructive criticism AND notes of positive re-inforcement would be greatly appreciated. (You have NO idea how many hours went into pulling this together! The more input we have, the better the program will get.)
Please email Tina with any input at: volunteer@jkcs-oakville.org
Need More Kids for the Robotics/Engineering/Animation Workshops in February at JKCS
WE NEED A MINIMUM OF 8 STUDENTS TO RUN EACH OF THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS. SO FAR, WE ONLY HAVE 4 STUDENTS SIGNED UP FOR ANIMATION AND 1 FOR ROBOTICS. IF YOU'D LIKE TO SIGN UP, PLEASE SIGN UP SOON!

VERY exciting news! JKCS is pleased to offer three new children's technology workshops, hosted by Murray Buckler. In the fall, Mr. Buckler introduced the robotics workshop where appoximately 18 of our students participated enthusiastically!!

Need Uniforms? Call Sarah!
Are your kids hitting an after Christmas growth spurt? If you are in need of any used school uniforms, please contact Sarah VanEs at: sarah_vanes@yahoo.ca to arrange a shopping trip to the upstairs mezzanine "uniform store".
We are also in need of used white shirts in our "uniform store". If you would like to donate shirts or any other uniform pieces, to the school, please leave a bag in the school office.
If you mark your family name on the bag, we will know that you would like to receive a portion of the proceeds from those items back (40%) when they sell.
This might also be a good time to remind everyone that if you have questions about which uniform pieces are appropriate, you can always check our website page to see the photos and uniform requirements. CLICK HERE to go to the uniform page.
Any students who are not dressed in appropriate uniforms may be asked to change into something from the used uniform store or may be issued a uniform ticket which must be signed by a parent and then returned to school. Please note that a few common infractions are:
- wearing a coloured shirt underneath a white shirt that shows out from underneath
- navy tights with kilts or dresses (they should be burgandy)
- boots worn as indoor shoes (they should be shoes only)
- kilts that are too short (they should be 3 fingers above the knee)
- navy sweatshirts worn over white shirts (should be a JKCS burgandy sweater)
Thanks parents, for helping us keep our uniforms consistent in fairness to everyone.
Lost n' Found for January

Here's the latest haul from the Lost n' Found box. Recognize anything? Please pick up ASAP if something looks like yours or send your child to have a look on the tables in the lobby. These lost n' found tables will be on display until for another week and then will go to a Christian charity. We keep only one previous month's items in the box.

Pastor's Lunch - Feb. 15th
It's almost time for our second annual Pastor's Lunch! Last year we were able to invite the first third of our more than 70 Pastors, as represented by our students to a delicious lunch.
This year, we've invited the second third of our Pastor's (we just can't fit them all in the building at once) via our students. So... if your child came home with an invitation -- they have been specially selected to invite your Pastor/Church leader to have lunch with them at school.
Here's how the lunch works:
- Pastors arrive at school at 11:30 and are greeted by the student that invited them.
- Pastors and their students go on a treasure hunt around the school.
- Pastors and their students have lunch together in our lobby (you don't have to pack a lunch that day!)
- Pastors and their students enjoy some presentations by our students and staff
- Pastors and their students get to know each other better and our students have had a chance to be an ambassador for our wonderful school.
If your child received the invitation and for some reason, cannot invite the Pastor to join them for lunch on Feb. 15, please let Mrs. Jennifer Bergner know immediately at: jbergner@jkcs-oakville.org so that we can ask another child from the same congregation to take over.
P.S. Your child should write the name of your Pastor/church leader on the inside of the invitation as well as their own name and PERSONALLY deliver the invitation.

(Just trying to help you plan for some fun family memories!) Enjoy!
Bowl-a-thon Fri. Mar. 2, 2011
JKCS 2nd ANNUAL BOWL-A-THON
FRI. MAR. 2nd 2011
We’re striking up the fun, and this fundraiser’s right up your alley!
What is a Bowl-a-thon?
The JKCS Bowl-a-thon is a fun way for each and every student to come together to raise money for JKCS. Each student is asked to solicit pledges to raise money for our school. On Friday, March 2, 2012 the students will be bussed to Classic Bowl for 2 hours of continuous bowling. Each time they roll a ball, they’ll be rolling in funds to help JKCS.
How do we raise money?
Children are encouraged to gather pledges for their morning of bowling. Our goal is $22K as a school, over a 4-week period, and incentives are offered to the children for their fundraising efforts.
Why do we ask that each student participate?
John Knox Christian School promotes healthy living and lifestyle for our students. With winter ending, bowling offers a wonderful opportunity, regardless of the weather, to participate in an activity that offers relaxation, flexibility, use of muscles and joints not otherwise used, and an overall lifting of our spirits. You can be any age, and any type of bowler (skilled or just beginning) and still have a great time. More importantly, the JKCS Bowl-a-thon promotes teamwork, community and service to make a difference. Serving together with other students, your child will share in the John Knox journey.
What will the money be used for?
John Knox Christian School is committed to education and engaging its students to serve and glorify Christ. Your support of the Bowl-a-thon will contribute to help meet the needs over and above our day-to-day operations, including contributing to the financial needs of our Bursary fund.
We wish to thank you in advance for your generous and giving spirit in supporting both your children and our school.

A big welcome to Phillip, who joined our class this week! We have been very busy with speeches, among other things – and the students did a great job. February promises to be a lot of fun as we get ready for the Bowl-A-Thon in early March.
