JKCS PARENT UPDATE
|
|
|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
January 27, 2012
The teaching staff of John Knox had a great day this past Monday. While the students were at home and experiencing a different type of a Monday, the teachers were at school discussing a variety of educational matters.
Our day began by discussing a vision for what we want our graduates to experience and a vision for what good teaching involves. The discussion and documentation continue and should be finalized well enough for publication by the end of this school year.
The day continued with presentations by Mrs. van der Boom about differentiated instruction, assessment, and pedagogy. Those presentations prompted us to discuss teaching concepts such as altering lesson plans to match the learner's needs, involving the students in the goal-setting and monitoring process, and presenting a variety of lessons to encourage each learner.
During the afternoon, we discussed our recently implemented Daily Physical Activity (DPA). We talked about some of the parameters around the program and shared various activities with each other in an effort to build our repertoire. In addition, we looked at a computer program that would help teachers identify internet sites that would help teachers and students consolidate ideas and concepts in unique and interesting ways.
This was a significant day for me. It represents the first internal Professional Development Day with the teachers since I arrived at John Knox eighteen months ago. My hope is that we can develop this even more. Research shows that when staffs develop together and are provided with the appropriate structures for support and encouragement, the organization grows stronger.
Thanks for the day! It was very helpful to us! I look forward to seeking the fruits of our labours as we proceed towards the best school we can be as we unravel the truth of God's creation and treat all learners with respect and encouragement.
In Christ,
Mr. George Petrusma
Principal

Gr. 6 Band & Drama Switch Tues. Jan. 31
Our grade 6 Band and Drama students put on a wonderful Winterlude performance this week for their proud parents. Now grade 6 students get to experience half of year of BOTH band and drama, so that they can make a knowledgeable decision in grade 7 & 8 when they decide to pursue one of those options.
Those same grade 6 parents will be treated to another performance at the end of the year, where they will once again, enjoy a performance of both band and drama.
Special thanks go out to Ms. Pasma and Mrs. Reid for co-ordinating a very entertaining venue.
Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 31st, our band and drama students will switch to the subject that haven't yet experienced.

Believe it or not, they all said they appreciated the fact that JKCS prepared them for high school by running year end exams! They felt prepared, knew how to study and manage their time and we're certain they all got great marksl!
What a wonderful way to give back to our school! Thanks so much!
Re-Enrollment Forms DUE - Jan. 31
![forms[1]](http://www.jkcs-oakville.org/media/com_acymailing/resized/forms%5B1%5Dthumb150x150.jpg)
We have quite a few forms in... but are still missing a few! Please send yours in ASAP if you haven't already!!
--------------------------------------------------
It sounds crazy that we have to start thinking about September in January - but we do!
In order to fill our classes, make a budget and hire teachers we need to know who will be attending school.
In February, we start offering spots for September to new families! Any family for whom we can't answer the question, "Is there room for my child?" may walk away from our school, impacting our budget and your tuition fees!
So... pretty pretty please, send in your re-enrollment forms and post-dated cheque for $750 ASAP! The deadline is Jan. 31, but we hope to have them in sooner! Hard copies were also sent home in backpacks.
Click HERE for the Re-enrollment forms. They are also available on the website under "News" and "Downloads" along with all the other school forms you might need.
Thanks for Stream of Dreams Paint Donation
We are getting geared up for our whole-school environmental project, Stream of Dreams. To help raise awareness of the effects of contaminents in run off water, we'll be learning how we can be responsible for God's creation and then we will create a mural of painted fish on the back fence.
We are still on the lookout for one of two more volunteers who are a able to help sand and paint our fish before they are decorated by our students. If you can help, please email our volunteer co-ordinator, Tina Rizzuto Willan at: volunteer@jkcs-oakville.org
We would also like to celebrate the wonderful generousity of General Paint of Mississauga, and their manager, Donna, for their donation of the primer, white and blue Envirogard paint that we will be using for our mural. Located at 3350 Ridgeway Drive, Unit 6, General Paint has generously agreed to provide JKCS with all of its paint needs for our Stream of Dreams project. If you stop by the store, be sure to thank them for their support of JKCS.

PRAYER CORNER
Johnstone-Cruz Family
Please be in prayer for little Jacob, son of Steven and Ruby. Jacob has been hospitalized at Sick Kids once again. Pray also for the Johnstone-Cruz family, that they will be strengthened and encouraged.
The last time Jacob was hospitalized, both Steven and Ruby really coveted our prayers and said that they felt the body of Christ in prayer for them every day!
The Panza's Nephew
Please pray for Betty Panza's nephew, Jon, who has been diagnosed with a very rare disease in his hip. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors and most of all for increased blood flow to the area and a miraculous healing!
