JKCS PARENT UPDATE

Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
January 20, 2012
I have to tell you a story. It is one of those stories that reminds me that God is in control, and we are not.
This year we have established a clear fundraising strategy that includes three major fundraisers. The first one is called the Annual Fund Drive and includes our dinner, a mailing, and a collection at Christmas. The second one includes a student Bowl-a-thon in which the students ask for sponsorships. The third one is our resurrected Golf Tournament and Auction which surpassed our wildest dreams last year.
The Annual Fund Drive happens during the months of November and December and our fundraising strategy showed that we needed to raise $30,000. On the last regular school day of December, the drive amount stood at $20,000.
We here at the school involved in fundraising remind ourselves often that we must remain faithful to the Lord and bathe each effort in prayer. Even though our goal of $30,000 was short, we remained committed to the idea that the Lord was in charge.
We didn't ask the Lord to meet our goal. We didn't ask Him to send one donor to give $10,000 to our school. We only wanted to try our best, remain faithful to the mission and vision of the school, and ask the Lord to bless us.
By the end of December 22nd, one donor came forward and gave us a cheque in the amount of $10,000. I was left speechless and emotional. A couple was used by the Lord to accomplish our man-made goal of $30,000 on the last day of the school year.
Besides giving thanks to the couple, I find myself continuing to give thanks to the Lord. It is more than the goal that was reached. It is more than receiving a cheque with a huge amount on the last day. It is about giving thanks to the Lord for His faithfulness. It is about receiving the lesson (once again) that the Lord is in control and no matter how much we worry, God will work it out in His plan and His timing!
That lesson came to me recently. Has it ever come to you?
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

NEWS
JKCS Students on Mission in Trinidad
This March break, four of our grade 8 students will be headed down to Trinidad to serve disadvantaged kids in a rural orphange. Tim H., Shaun V., Kathleen H., and Adian K. are part of the joint Youth Group at Chartwell Clarkson and King's Community Church. Their churches have been supporting The Bridge of Hope Orphanage for many years.
Our students really covet your prayers for the time they are away, sharing God's love with the children at the orphanage. Please pray for: 1) safety 2) experiences that draw them closer to God 3) a meaningful connection with the children 4) group cohesiveness 5) a lasting impact on the orphanage 6) financial support.
If you would be willing to pray for our amazing students, please let us know (jbergner@jkcs-oakville.org) and we will pass on your emails as an encouragement to them.
Tues. Jan. 24 is like a FRIDAY
Stay with me on this one, but to make sure we cover all the academic subjects for an equal amount of time in the school year, there will be a few "pretend" or "adjustment" days in our school calendar this year.
So... this Tues. Jan. 24 will be "like" a Friday but ONLY in terms of the class schedule for the day. Subs will still be served for lunch on Tuesday as usual, however the CLASSES that normally happen on Friday will happen on Tuesday. At the end of the week, the classes that normally happen on Friday will happen AGAIN on Friday. It's like having 2 Fridays in a week schedule-wise.
Also... if your child normally has gym or music on a Friday - don't forget to send those gym clothes or instruments (including recorders).
This day switch will NOT affect activities outside the curriculum like: Dance & Tambourine Club or Piano Lessons.
If you are confused, please contact the office for clarification: office@jkcs-oakville.org or (905) 829-8048 x0
This change means that our PART-TIME kindergarten students WILL COME TO SCHOOL ON TUES. JAN. 24 (These are the students that normally only come to school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.)
Sharing Your Opinion Helps Us Fill our Wonderful School!
Do you have some Christian friends with children who would benefit from attending our wonderful school?
Would you believe that simply by sharing your good opinion of our school, your experience is the NUMBER ONE reason people decide to investigate more deeply or simply just join our school?
It's enrollment season! The time of year where people begin to consider how much better a Christian education could be for their children. Could you help us by encourage any Christian friends to attend one of our Open Houses? We have one every month, and this month's is Monday, January 30th from 7:30-8:30pm.
They can bring their children with them and they will enjoy a short presentation followed by a tour of the school.

Welcome Jon Binner - Thanks Natalie Lorimer
Please join me in welcoming Jon Binner to our staff. Jon will be joining Nancy Kilavuka in the Before and After School Care program. He will also take over the study hall responsibility from Nancy, and will also help out as a supply teacher. Since Nancy has taken over the grade 5 EA job and the student numbers in Before and After School Care have increased, we needed to add another person to the mix.
Jon is a recent graduate of the Queen's education program and is certified in ELL. He is also currently taking a reading course. Jon comes to us with a great deal of experience in music and sports. We are looking forward to his involvement in our school and trust that you will join us in giving him a great JKCS welcome!
A HUGE JKCS thank you to Natalie Lorimer who has been our part-time EA in grade 5 since the fall. Natalie has decided to step down from her position here to focus on her family's busy schedule.
Re-Enrollment Forms DUE - Jan. 31
It sounds crazy that we have to start thinking about September in January - but we do!
In order to fill our classes, make a budget and hire teachers we need to know who will be attending school.
In February, we start offering spots for September to new families! Any family for whom we can't answer the question, "Is there room for my child?" may walk away from our school, impacting our budget and your tuition fees!
So... pretty pretty please, send in your re-enrollment forms and post-dated cheque for $750 ASAP! The deadline is Jan. 31, but we hope to have them in sooner! Hard copies were also sent home in backpacks.
Click HERE for the Re-enrollment forms. They are also available on the website under "News" and "Downloads" along with all the other school forms you might need.
Newspapers Needed in the Art Room
Our art students have been working hard this year and our newspaper supply is running low. If you have any newspapers that you no longer need, please send them to school. They will be well used and appreciated in the art room! Thank you! Ms. Joubert

Pastor's Lunch - Feb. 15th
It's almost time for our second annual Pastor's Lunch! Last year we were able to invite the first third of our more than 70 Pastors, as represented by our students to a delicious lunch.
This year, we've invited the second third of our Pastor's (we just can't fit them all in the building at once) via our students. So... if your child came home with an invitation -- they have been specially selected to invite your Pastor/Church leader to have lunch with them at school.
Here's how the lunch works:
- Pastors arrive at school at 11:30 and are greeted by the student that invited them.
- Pastors and their students go on a treasure hunt around the school.
- Pastors and their students have lunch together in our lobby (you don't have to pack a lunch that day!)
- Pastors and their students enjoy some presentations by our students and staff
- Pastors and their students get to know each other better and our students have had a chance to be an ambassador for our wonderful school.
If your child received the invitation and for some reason, cannot invite the Pastor to join them for lunch on Feb. 15, please let Mrs. Jennifer Bergner know immediately at: jbergner@jkcs-oakville.org so that we can ask another child from the same congregation to take over.
P.S. Your child should write the name of your Pastor/church leader on the inside of the invitation as well as their own name and PERSONALLY deliver the invitation.

PRAYER CORNER
Johnstone-Cruz Family
Please be in prayer for little Jacob, son of Steven and Ruby. Jacob has been hospitalized at Sick Kids once again. Pray also for the Johnstone-Cruz family, that they will be strengthened and encouraged.
The last time Jacob was hospitalized, both Steven and Ruby really coveted our prayers and said that they felt the body of Christ in prayer for them every day!
The Panza's Nephew
Please pray for Betty Panza's nephew, Jon, who has been diagnosed with a very rare disease in his hip. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors and most of all for increased blood flow to the area and a miraculous healing!

We enjoyed serving at "Sew on Fire" on Wednesday and learned a lot about all the places and people they serve. Grade 4a - Mrs. Heeringa & Mr. Fledderus
What an exciting week in grade 4, and in the school for that matter! It was a joy to watch the students use their hands in service at "Sew on Fire" on Wednesday. I know it was an experience that they will remember for a lifetime. By now your students, are well on their way to writing their speeches. Please be sure they have something to submit as a rough copy (even if it is more of a good copy) for Tuesday. We are looking for a good introduction, and that the time has been written on the top of the rough copy is the appropriate length. We have been busy doing some in class experiments with sound the past two weeks, and we will be wrapping this unit up next week with a test. Enjoy the long weekend!
Mon.: no school PD Day Tues.: Rough Copy of Speeches due—it should include the time, and have a great introduction(as talked about in class)! Grade 7b/8b - Mr. Bibby
This week, your student's did themselves proud by working hard to assemble 160 hygiene care boxes and 120 food boxes for those in need at Speroway! They learned some valuable lessons... i) how to clean-up after themselves and ii) in teamwork we each have to commit to our part in order to be successful! It's too bad you missed seeing them in action, but you could have them try out the clean-up part on their rooms this weekend! Please remember, next week we have a PD Day on Monday and on Tuesday we're actually going by a Friday schedule! Have a great weekend! Mr.B
