JKCS PARENT UPDATE
|
|
|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
December 9, 2011
This morning I sat in an assembly and heard two young students share their stories about how they came to Canada. One student has been here for three years and the other student came to Canada recently. Both students left their native land and came to a place without any contacts in Canada.
It made me think a lot about many of our families who have had exactly the same experience. My own parents came from Holland many years ago to settle in a land that provided much more promise of a higher quality of life. Even though leaving their families behind was a very difficult thing to do, they trusted that the Lord would bless their decision to come to a new land called Canada.
I personally know nothing of the emotions involved in coming to a new land. My own life is one of routine in a safe and tolerant country. I never worry about many things here in Canada and, truth be told, I take many things for granted. I wake up each day with the calm assurance that I am safe, that I have a job, and that I know where all my family members are located.
Other people in the world are not so fortunate. Safety, health, and food are not all things available to all people. Many people live with many worries. Some people decide to leave their homeland for the promise of a better land.
To hear the two students share their stories represented two of many immigrant stories that exist in Canada. Those two stories encouraged me to give a bit in order to make six families lives that much easier.
I am thankful for Juan and Camila and their stories. We prayed this morning for them and their families, for the Halton Multicultural Agency that is seeking to make their transition as easy as possible. Please join us in that prayer.
Be sure to ask your children about the assembly and what touched their hearts. Be sure to think about contributing some money in an effort to support our six families. May the Lord be praised as we strive to be the hands of feet of Jesus Christ in the middle of the season which focuses us on the birth of the Saviour!
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

Quebec Trip Forms DUE
We have an exceptionally fun and educational experience planned for our grade 7 & 8 students in the Spring! They are going to Quebec to see first hand, some of the important places in early Canadian history. Almost everyone has completed their forms and sent them in along with a cheque, but we are missing 20 applications.
Please do not let finances hold you back from participating in this memorable experience. If you could use some financial assistance, please contact Tamara Dempster, in confidence, at: tdempster@jkcs-oakville.org. In keeping with the fundamental belief that in Christian education, we need to help each other out, some of our families have already generously donated extra funds. We have also fund-raised some of the funds to help defray the overall costs.
Students who choose not to participate on the trip will be completing a similar project, in written form at home.
If you have any questions about the trip, please contact Josie Jager at: jpjager@hotmail.com
Farewell Mrs. Randa Khalil
We say a special "Thank you" and "Good-bye" to our student teacher, Mrs. Randa Khalil. You've enriched our learning experiences and brought a smile to our faces. Thank you for all your efforts and being a part of JKCS!

Notes from "Hold on to your Kids"
Here's a summary (done by two of our moms who attended) of one of the Halton community seminars that was hosted by an area school entitled, "Connect on to your Kids". Dr. Gabor Maté was the speaker, who is a well known physician, thought provoking public speaker and co-author of the book Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. He explained how and why it is crucial to maintain a close relationship with your children and teens, and suggest ways to reconnect with them when they are lost to their peers.

New Start Time for Christmas Production - Dec. 16th 7pm

What an exciting opportunity for our younger students to connect with some of our older Christian family members! Our primary choir is headed out to Holland Christian Homes to sing and entertain our Christian seniors.
If you would like to tag along for fun, please let Janette Gils know at: jgils@jkcs-oakville.org It might be a wonderful opportunity for you to enjoy seeing our students making friends and connections with our older and wiser seniors.
Skating Party - Dec. 22
One of our traditions at JKCS is to celebrate the last day of school before the Christmas break with a skating party! Parents are very warmly welcomed to come and skate with us on Dec. 22 at 2:00 pm at the Can Lan arena, located just south of the school on Ford Dr. at Cornwall.
Buses will leave at approximately 2:00, but we do also count on parents to take their own children to the rink if they will be joining us. That helps keep our bus costs low and makes for a very fun and social day! When the skating party is finished at 3:00, students may go home directly from the rink with their parents. Students who travelled by bus, will be bused back to school at approximately 3:00 pm. Please remember to notify your child's teacher, if you will taking them home from the rink directly so we can keep everyone safe for the holidays!
Our kindergarten students will be staying at school to enjoy a movie and treats (can you imaging tying all those skates and trying to keep our little ones up on their feet on the ice??) but have the option of attending the skating party, if their parents are willing to take them along to the rink.
Looking forward to a great skating party! Hope to see you all there!
Christmas Break Dec. 23 - Jan. 8
Best wishes for a memorable family Christmas! Aren't we blessed to be able to openly celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour as a JKCS community? Merry Christmas everone!
School will be closed on Fri. Dec. 23 until Sun. Jan. 8. The office and school will be open in 2012 on Mon. Jan. 9th, our first day back to school!

Christmas Chess Tournament: If you have a chess board at home that 7A can borrow for the next two weeks, please ship it over to the classroom. We will need 12 boards in total to be able to have our tournament! Gift Exchange: On the last day of school before Christmas break, grade 7A will be participating in a fun gift exchange. This exchange is entirely optional. If your son/daughter would like to participate, please send in a wrapped, unlabeled gift. This gift should be a unisex gift: a gift that a boy or girl could appreciate. The gift should be between $10- 15. It should be a lot of fun! I can't wait! Christmas Program: Be sure to come out to the Christmas program on Friday, December 16. The program will take place at Clearview CRC at 7:00pm. Our class has been working very hard on our black light piece and would love for you to see it! Black Light Drama: Students in the black light drama must bring black clothing to school for Monday, December 12. We will be practicing with the black lights all week and need the appropriate clothing to do so. Remember: black/navy shirt (no logos), black/navy pants, black/navy hat to hide hair, black/navy socks. No skin can show because the black light will illuminate it! Thanks! Friday: Christmas program please be at Clearview no later than 6:45 ready to wear your black clothing.

Grade 7b/8b - Mr. Bibby
This week, we went to a powerful play at King's and had a nice Spirit Day assembly at JKCS. We were introduced to two of the immigrant families we will be supporting for Christmas this year! Our class will be joining with the grade one's to raise $150 for them. Please consider contributing to this initiative when your child asks this week. Mr.B.
Band: Theory sheet #1 will be due on Tuesday, December 13. December is a short month practice-wise; students only need to fill in practice sheets for the first two weeks. The new sheet will be due on Monday, December 12, with 100 minutes minimum. Geography: Students continue to present their logging projects on Monday, December 12! Be sure to bring all the appropriate materials for this date! Math: Our test on unit 3 was on Friday. We start our new unit on patterns this week. Literature: We are continuing to read The Bronze Bow. Each week we will read several chapters and complete a piece of writing on what we thought about the selection. It is a very interesting novel, set in the time of Jesus – ask your student about it! French: We will have a spelling quiz on Monday December 12. Friday: Christmas program please be at Clearview no later than 6:45 wearing Christmas colours (red, green, gold, silver, white) Drama students have specific dress instructions.

Grade 8a - Mr. Shelley
As I write this, I am looking forward to parent – teacher conferences. I trust that the conferences will be beneficial; if you were able to meet with me, thank you for taking the time to come in and chat!
We also enjoyed our trip to King's on Tuesday – the actors in the play did a great job.
