JKCS PARENT UPDATE
|
|
|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
November 25, 2011
Do you like receiving feedback? When you do something, is it one of your hopes that you will receive some honest feedback about the job you did? Do you look forward to job appraisals? Do you focus more on the things that you are doing well or the things that need improvement? Does a performance appraisal intimidate you or motivate you?
These are some of the questions that you as parents will need to face in the near future. It's learning report time again. Last Friday, the students didn't come to school so that our teachers could mark assignments and tests and work on their students' learning reports.
I know that for some students and parents this is a difficult time. Some students may find learning difficult or find that the effort needed to do well does not come easily to them. Other students and parents may find this process a time of celebration and rejoicing. Those students have put the necessary effort into their school work and have been gifted in a way that matches with the way we as a culture have set up our schooling process.
Regardless of your perspective on the learning report process, I want you to use this time to look for the nuggets of encouragement. Look at the report, talk to your children and their teachers, and rejoice where your children have used their gifts and talents well. Set goals for the next term. Set up consistent and predictable habits at home so that your children know what is expected of them. Stay in touch with their teachers so that we form a great partnership of support for your children.
These habits will encourage and support your children well. As much as your children may not enjoy the practices you are mandating, remind them that they will thank you later in life. The determination and support you provide today will serve them well as they live their lives.
As you fulfill your parental role and as your children fulfill their student roles, may the Lord look upon you with favour and bless you with the words found in the parable of the talents: "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share in your master's happiness!" (Matthew 25: 23)
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

George Petrusma, our beloved Principal, does not want to be left out of all the fun and is making himself available to meet with any parents at any time during interviews, even if it's just to have a quick coffee! (BTW George's favourite is a Tim Horton's French Vanilla ...nudge, nudge, wink, wink!)
New Start Time for Christmas Production - 7pm
We've heard from parents that we need to start our Christmas production a little earlier in order to get our little ones to bed on time!
So... our December 16th Christmas production, which will include everyone in the school, will be held at: 7:00pm at Clearview Church (across the road from the school.)
There is plenty of parking at Clearview and room for our whole gang to come and celebrate Christmas together.
New Emergency Calling System in Place
Thinking about snow days yet? We are and we want to be prepared!
This year, instead of using our previous parent-based emergency call chains, all parents will now be called via an automatic computerized phone messaging service in case of a school closure due to bad weather. The system will phone both home and cell numbers. You can expect this call to come before 6:45am. You will also receive an email and it will be posted on our website. (www.jkcs-oakville.org)
We keep everyone's email addresses, home and cell numbers in our database at school but if any of these numbers have changed, please contact us at: office@jkcs-oakville.org
You wouldn't want to be the only family that doesn't get to sleep in on a snow day!
Welcome Back Barb! See You At School Julie! Thank you Mary Ann!

On Dec. 2nd we will welcome back Mrs. Heeringa from her maternity leave with daughter Abigail!
Our grade 4 students will be happy to see Mrs. Heeringa, and happy too to continue to see Mrs. Oussoren across the hall in the SK classroom, as she moves to fill the role of EA. Thank you Julie for the wonderful ways in which you brought your lessons to life and filled our students' mind with your exceptionally creative and thought provoking ways! You are an amazing teacher!
Thank you too, to Mrs. Visser, who just couldn't stay away from our wonderful school after her retirement as VP. Alas, cruise seasons beckons, so it's bon voyage over the winter for Mrs. Visser. Send us postcards from all the warm and sunny locales!
Alumni Dinner a GREAT Night!
Our first Annual Alumni & Friends Dinner was held in our gymnasium last Friday Nov. 18th. We were excited to see Mr. and Mrs. Gord & Pam Forbes, former Librarian and board member and hear from former principal Mrs. Lorna Keith. We had representation from many of our teachers and staff who also worked hard at setting up the evening décor to ensure all our guests felt welcome and special. Thank you to all our families who came out in support of John Knox. We trust you enjoyed the wonderful stories Mr. Jordan Kuyvenhoven shared about his grandparents, Hans & Gerrie Kuyvenhoven and the hilarious stories shared by Mrs. Lorna Keith.
Our guests left the evening with renewed memories and friendships, history lessons, good fellowship, wonderful music and a gift CD; prepared and donated by the Salib family featuring pictures and songs which walked us though the past 52 years.
If you are in the school in the next few weeks be sure to take a look at our wall of pictures in the lobby and take a walk down memory lane or simply embrace the history lesson. Plan to add to your calendar next year's Alumni and Friends Dinner. We look forward to continuing to connect with our partners in the months ahead.

Servant Team Leaf Raking Report - Letters from Families
Here are a few excerpts from some of the beautiful letters of thanks we received from the families whose leaves were raked by the Servant Team.
"May I again take this opportunity to say a very big thank you for coming to our house on Saturday morning with your fantastic group of helpers and raking our leaves for us.
It may not have seemed like much to you, but to us it really does make such a big difference, it allowed us to spend a few hours together having lunch and not having to worry about finding the time to do it.
Your prayers for our family where gratefully received and appreciated also.
Have a wonderful week at school and we hope that you continue with helping other families as you did us today."
Another: "Betty: Once again, my sincere thanks for organizing the rakers - nice to meet the three adults and the four kids - they did just a great job and Chris gave me his phone number so that he and Josiah could come back again as the maple in the back yard is just starting to fall - so there will be a lot more leaves. It is so commendable and good for youngsters to realize that there are seniors and people with health problems who really appreciate their help. I have written my own to children to tell them about the raking and suggested that their children might want to do something similar in their neighbourhoods."
Another: "My husband and I would like to express our sincere thanks, for the group that came to our home this past weekend.
Since the diagnosis in June, time has flown by to November, and as you are aware, maintenance and doing little things around the house, gets put on the back burner.
So the timing of the kids and school to put forward their generous time to do some yard work, came at the perfect time, when we were wondering how to tackle it."
Another: "Thank you very much for coming to my home to rake clean up my garden. I just appreciated it so much. It is a wonderful feeling to know that the yard is ready for our winter.
It is a great service to people like me who, due to a disability or sickness or age, would be unable to cope with the task."
Missing! Steven's iPod
Please keep your eyes open for Steven's (gr. 7/8) ipod in a black rubber case! It went missing on Thursday and Steven would really like to find it. Please spread the word and keep your eyes open around the school and in the parking lot. If you find it, please contact the office immediately at: office@jkcs-oakville.org Thanks for your watchful eyes!
