JKCS PARENT UPDATE
|
|
|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
November 4, 2011
This past week we made some adjustments to our new timetable. We took into account some of the feedback we received about the length of the eating times, the timing of the eating times, and the time to organize agendas.
Both students and staff are enjoying the adjustments. We have lengthened the nutrition breaks, added a daily physical activity break in the middle of the day, and placed a homeroom agenda and closing time at the end of the day.
Sometimes when change happens, there is an adjustment time. In an effort to fulfill our 1000 hours of instruction time, we have started school earlier by ten minutes and extended the day by five minutes. As a result, I have noticed that a number of our students have been coming to school regularly after the 8:40 a.m. bell.
When students are late to school, it affects different people. Coming late to class puts the student in a position where announcements, devotions, and part of a lesson are missed. Organization for the student is then negatively affected. The class and teacher are interrupted. When a student comes late, the teacher needs to answer the door and stop the activity. The class mates will often be distracted by the late-comer as well.
May I ask all of our families to aim at dropping off your students at our school at 8:30 a.m.? Our teacher supervision times begin at 8:25 a.m. If students arrive at 8:30 a.m., it provides them with an opportunity to play outside and get some fresh air, come into the building with the other students, and start the day feeling well organized.
Don't get me wrong, there are times when it is unavoidable to come late to school. I have experienced firsthand the effect of vehicles in this area. Doctors and dentists also need to see your children at certain times that affect the school day.
But if you have felt yourself aiming to have your children here later than 8:30 a.m., could you please adjust your timing so that they begin the day with all the other students? Your attention to punctuality will help a variety of people. Thanks for considering if that adjustment applies to you. Your help is appreciated.
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

NEWS
We're Trying A New Bus & Car Pick-Up Routine
We're going to try a NEW bus & car pick up routine at the end of the day, starting Mon. Nov. 7
Hopefully, this new routine will eliminate the line-up of cars onto Ford Drive, and make pick-up and bus loading safer and faster for everyone!
Here's how it will work:
- Buses will park very closely together (so no one can walk in between the buses) in the 'Kiss n' Ride lane closest to the school starting at the fire hydrant, outside the primary end.
- Parents in cars will start lining up in the Express lane with the first car in line parked outside the senior end of the school, by the dumpster.
- Bused and 'Pick-up' students will be dismissed AT THE SAME TIME.
- Pick-up Students should stand together WITH THEIR SIBLINGS as soon as they get outside
- Cars will leave as soon as they are loaded.
- When the buses are loaded and ready to depart, one of our wonderful staff members will stop the parent pick-up line of cars momentarily to allow the buses to pull out.
Please be patient with us as we try this new procedure! And, please leave LOTS of room for the buses to park and manovere in Primary Kiss n' Ride lane. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Cruickshank at: scruickshank@jkcs-oakville.org
Wed. Nov. 9th is Like a Friday
Friday Schedule Day Alert! This Wed. Nov. 9th will be LIKE a Friday as we adjust our schedule to make sure we cover all the academic subjects for an equal amount of time in the school year.
So... this Wed. Nov. 9 will be "like" a Friday but ONLY in terms of the class schedule for the day. Pizza will still be served for lunch as usual, however the CLASSES that normally happen on Friday will also happen on Wednesday. At the end of the week, the classes that normally happen on Friday will happen AGAIN on Friday. It's like having 2 Fridays in a week schedule-wise.
Also... if your child normally has gym or music on a Friday - don't forget to send those gym clothes or instruments (including recorders) to school on Wednesday.
This day switch will NOT affect activities outside the curriculum like: Dance & Tambourine Club or Piano Lessons.
If you are confused, please contact the office for clarification: office@jkcs-oakville.org or (905) 829-8048 x0
Car Decals - Get Yours & Support our Wonderful School!
Every year, in order to balance the budget and keep tuition reasonable, we need about 30 new families to join our school. We count heavily on our existing parents to spread the word about our wonderful school! There is no better marketing tool than one happy JKCS family encouraging another Christian family to consider send their children here!
One of the best ways to "Tell Your Friends about JKCS" is to have a sticker on your car. It's a great conversation starter! Which Christian friend can you tell about our wonderful school?
If you need another or a new "Proud Parent of a JKCS Student" car window glass stickers, please contact Mrs. Jennifer Bergner at: jbergner@jkcs-oakville.org and she will send one home with your child! You can also feel free to grab one if you're in the office at any time.
These stickers will not cause any damage to paint or glass and can be removed at any time.
Stream of Dreams
John Knox Student Council has invited the Stream of Dreams Watershed Education and Community Art program to the children in our school during March 2012.
Stream of Dreams is an eco-education program that will introduce our whole school to our local watershed and the streams that flow or once flowed through them. We will learn how we can all help take care of water, and the project's legacy will be a Stream of Dreams fish mural on our school fence. Each student and staff member will paint a fish to contribute to the mural. The program's goal is to help our community learn how to conserve and protect water resources and to inspire behavioral change for environmental protection.
Our school is responsible for preparing the wooden fish for the students to paint during the program. We will need volunteers to trace and cut out fish, sand and prime them with blue and white paint. Volunteers are also needed on installation day – April 13, 2012
If you are willing to volunteer to help with this project please contact: Tina Rizzuto-Willan. Work will begin as soon as our volunteers are ready ?
We need volunteers for the following tasks:
- Painting the plywood sheets
- Cutting approx 200, 16 inch squares of plywood
- Tracing fish outlines on the squares(templates will be provided)
- Cutting fish out (need either a ban saw, scroll saw, or jig-saw)
- Sanding and painting edges of fish
- Drilling holes in the fish (1/4 inch bit) to attach fish to the fence
- 6 volunteers to help with the installation of the fish (April 13,2012)
We are also in need of the following supplies:
- At least 2 full sheets of 1/2 inch plywood
- 1 gallon white Envirogard paint
- 1 gallon of blue Envirogard paint
- Paint brushes
- Sandpaper
Stream of Dreams is a project that hundreds of other schools in Canada have participated in. Please visit the Stream of Dreams website to learn more about this exciting program. www.streamofdreams.org

EVENTS
Students Represent JKCS at Nov. 11 Memorial
During the morning of Friday, November 11, Mr. Petrusma and four grade 8 students will represent our school at the town cenotaph service. Sydney B., Stephanie C., Travis F., and Breanna J. will lay a wreath on behalf of our school in an effort to participate in our community's remembrance of people who have fought in wars. The rest of our students and staff (and any parents that would like to join us) will participate in our annual Remembrance Day assembly in the gym at 10 45 a.m.
May the Lord be with those people who grieve the loss of loved ones during this time.
Alumni Dinner Open to Everyone
We have spread the word about our friends and alumni dinner to those who have left our school. Our intention was to give the alumni and friends first opportunity to attend. Now that we have completed that step, we would like to invite our families and their friends to join us.
Come as a single person, come as a couple, come as a table of eight! We would love to fill our gym with 150 people enjoying good food, good conversation, good entertainment, and good reflection.
On Friday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. you have the opportunity to be served a meal and have some fun. Mr. Petrusma will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Change of Scene will perform, and Mrs. Keith, a former JKCS principal, will share some words of reflection. Just e-mail Mrs. Stubbert at: alumni@jkcs-oakville.org to reserve your places.
There is no cost to this fun-filled evening, but a free will offering will be taken.

HOMEWORK
November 4, 2011

Junior Kindergarten – Mrs. Jarvis
We have had a great week back together after the extra long weekend. The kids were excited to see their friends again.
Preparing for Winter: As the cold weather has approached the students have started to wear their warm coats. It would be very helpful to take time at home practicing with your child how get themselves dressed to play outside. Please encourage your child to dress themselves as much as possible. I know it takes them longer to do it themselves so allow yourself more time each morning in getting ready for school so that your child has that practice each day. Please also be mindful of the items your child is wearing to school, if it is too difficult for them to do it themselves then consider wearing something that they will have greater success doing on their own. (this includes snow pants, boots, mitts, ect) Zipper Club: The students will get the chance to join my zipper club. How they can join? Their job is to show me that they can do up their coats independently 5 times. I will chart their progress and once they have successfully completed this task they will receive a prize from my treasure box! (this also includes buttons if your child's coat doesn't have a zipper) In Need: egg shells-We will be doing a fun craft using egg shells to go with our Humpty Dumpty Rhyme. Please keep and wash off your egg shells to send in a bag for us to dry out and use. Star of the Week: George (bring all about me poster & pictures) Friday Nov. 4: Danielle's Birthday!!! (I missed this in the last update, sorry) Mrs. Jarvis off-my sister gets married this weekend! Monday: Mrs. Jarvis will be off, recovering from my sister's wedding Wednesday: Bring in an object that begins with the letter c or k sound Friday: Taylor's Birthday!!! Remembrance Day, Return Nursery Rhyme Choice for the Recital, Mrs. Jarvis will be off again in London with my daughter for a Ringette Tournament
