JKCS PARENT UPDATE
|
|
|
Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
October 26, 2011
This is a short week. While the number of days and their names don't change, what has changed this week is that our school personnel will be at a convention at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario on Thursday and Friday.
Why do we set aside two days to attend a convention with all the other Christian educators in the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools? Three reasons immediately come to mind.
First, we are interested in connecting as a larger, Christian-school community. It is inspiring to devote together and hear 750 voices singing praises to our God in the Redeemer auditorium. At times, I have thought mass gatherings of Christians singing their hearts out is as close as my human mind can get to a glimpse of heaven.
Second, I have the privilege of attending presentations and workshops of people who are well-respected in their fields. This year's convention has the theme of "Culture making: Recovering our Creative Calling." Andy Crouch; an author, musician, and academic; is the keynote speaker and will challenge us to recover our creative calling. I am sure that other presenters will provide us with some food for thought as to how our schools can take that calling to another level.
Third, I have many conversations with people who are in the same line of work as I. For those of you who attend conventions, you know that sometimes the best learning opportunities come as a result of a private conversation with a colleague.
I am grateful for the Ontario Christian School Teachers Association who hosts this worthwhile event. I am thankful for the great facility at Redeemer which houses us so well. I am thankful that our calendar allows for the room to have our staff attend. And I am thankful for the opportunities that will soon come my way as a result of the experiences at Redeemer.
The Lord be with you as your children have an extended weekend away from the classroom. Feel free to give them other learning experiences. Have them notice the leaves, the squirrels, the cars, the clouds, and the temperature. See you on Monday!
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

NEWS
Wear Blue & White to Hear Paul Henderson at Prayer & Praise Assembly
Our students are sure excited! I'm guessing that this is also one Prayer & Praise assembly that many of our parents won't want to miss either!
Paul Henderson, a famous Canadian hockey icon, will be our guest speaker on Wed. Nov. 2 at 9:00am here at JKCS.
To make this an extra special day, we've declared Wed. Nov. 2 - Maple Leaf Blue & White Day. So, it will be a free-dress day, with students wearing blue or white! If you have any Maple Leafs hockey shirts or clothing, please wear those! Please remember that blue jeans (perfectly acceptable because they're blue), should be clean and neat with no holes or rips.
New School Day Timetable Starts Oct. 31
We have completed two months of our school year. Since we adopted a new schedule this year, we also promised ourselves a review shortly after implementation. After an extensive review of the changes to the schedule, we will be making a few adjustments. The new schedule will begin on Monday, October 31, 2011. Please be aware that these changes do not affect the required 1000 hours of instruction time nor the start and end times of the school day.
Here is a summary of the changes:
- Both nutrition breaks will be extended by five minutes so that they are 20 minutes each.
- Daily physical activity will be implemented in the middle of the day during period 4.
- Students in grades K-4 who eat efficiently will be permitted to go outside after 15 minutes of eating.
- A ten-minute homeroom time for agenda review and prayer will be added at the end of the day.
It is our hope that these adjustments to our schedule will provide our students with the necessary time for study, play, food, and organization. Thanks to our students and staff for adjusting.
Time to Write Christmas Cards
Who is On Your Christmas Card List?
We are excited to offer Christmas cards again this year, featuring your child's art work! This was a popular fundraiser last year, both our parents and students loved creating and receiving their one of a kind Christmas card packages. In November, your child's card will be sent home for you to view, show others and collect orders. For $20 you will receive a package of 12 cards with envelopes. In addition to giving this special keepsake to those you love you will also be supporting JKCS. For every package of 12 cards we sell JKCS earns $12.
So...start preparing your Christmas Card list, November is just days away!

EVENTS
Can a Moustache Give You Cancer?

Of course it can't! But growing one can help raise funds to fight it.
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces, in Canada and around the world. With their "Mo's", these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer.
Some of the male staff will be participating in this year's campaign. If some of the men in our community are brave enough, please join the "John Knox mo bros" team and grow a "Mo" during the month of November.
• Start Nov 1st clean shaven
• Then grow your moustache all month – nurture it, groom it, respect it
• Remember no beards and no goatees.
• For Movember style inspiration check out the Movember website www.movember.ca

Junior Kindergarten – Mrs. Jarvis
What an Awesome Autumn we have had! Even with all the rain we have enjoyed the beauty of God's creation. It is so nice to look out our classroom window into the forest behind us and see all the golden fall colours. We had a great time finishing up this month's theme on our orange/pumpkin day. The pumpkin bread was delicious. Ask your child all about their exploration of the inside and outside of the pumpkin. Our new theme for November is Nursery Rhymes. We will be learning and memorizing many rhymes in class. Our unit will end with a Nursery Rhyme recital. See the letter that went home on Wed. in your child's zippy for more information. Please post your calendar to check it each day to track what is happening in class and what needs to be brought to school. Have a great extra long weekend!
Classroom Observations: As I look around the classroom I see smiling faces. The students have made friends. They are happy and excited to greet each other each day. One of their highlights of the day is our time of worship. They love to dance and sing! While they are learning through center times, the students are sharing, caring and cooperating! It is awesome to observe them using their imaginations at the drama center, building with blocks, making my favourite foods to taste with the play dough and the creativity at the art center. Star of the Week:Danielle (bring all about me poster & pictures) Monday: Return Read-With-Me Tracking sheets for October Wednesday: Bring in an object that begins with the letter n Friday: Picture Retake day

Please read the SK newsletter that is coming home next week that will outline some of the special activities that we will enjoy during the month of November.

Thank you to Jason and Olamide for representing our class at the poetry assembly. It was very hard to pick just two of our children to present when they all did such a wonderful job. I thank God for your children's gifts of memorization and presentation.
If a blue suitcase arrives home with your child, you are being treated to a week's stay from our class bear, Terry. Please help your child to write about their adventures in Terry's journal. Feel free to include pictures of his stay. Your child may include items of interest to the suitcase.
Last week your child's interview was emailed to you so that you could help your child scrap book the page for our class book. Please return these pages as soon as possible.
Have a wonderful four days with your students. Please use this time to allow them to practice their reading with you. Please encourage your children to sign up for the independent reading session after they have practiced their books.

Grade 2a - Mrs. Schuurman & Mrs. Panza
We have had a great week, although it was a bit short!
On Tuesday we had a terrific Poetry Assembly that included a variety of poems from JK to Grade 8. Our class was well represented by Isabelle K., and Olivia T. They did a fantastic job of presenting their poems with clarity and enthusiasm. Thank you to all the students for all the work that everyone did in selecting, memorizing and reciting their poem to the Grade 2 class last Friday and this past Monday. Well done!
On Monday, students worked hard to find things in their cup of soil. Some students found bugs, water, pebbles, and air while others found seeds. It was a great hands-on lesson. On Tuesday we also had Island Day. The students were creating their islands using all the contributions from home as part of our Creation Studies unit. Thank you to those who contributed playdough for this event.
Next week, we begin with Ara as our Special Person of the Week. We look forward to learning more about Ara.
