Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
October 7, 2011This past Wednesday, I had the privilege of leading a workshop for the Servant Team. My workshop topic was about how the Lord is going to use each student to touch the lives of others this year. We heard about a Bible story and then shared our thoughts about how the Lord may use us.
The Bible story that was told was taken from 2 Samuel 9. That chapter tells the story of David and Mephibosheth. David has risen to the role of king. Mephibosheth is a person who is crippled and refers to himself as a "dead dog." David asks his servant, Ziba, for the name of someone in the land to whom can he show God's kindness. Mephibosheth, scared and intimidated, comes before the king and is promptly given farm land and a place at the king's table. It is an incredible story that highlights how the Lord used king David to touch the life of Mephibosheth.
Our Servant Team is interested in touching the lives of others. I am very thankful for the vision of people on our staff such as Mrs. Panza and Mrs. Jarvis who are leaders for our students in this area. I am also very thankful for the many students who are interested in helping this great venture! Please join me in praying for our Servant Team as they participate in many events that cause them to shed the light of Jesus Christ on the world.
How about you? Have you challenged yourself and your family members to be the arms and feet of Jesus? Sometimes, in my busy life, I fail to notice those around me who may need a hand or a kind word. I need to bring myself to a contemplative, slow pace to sense the Lord's presence and word to me. Please also join me in praying for opportunities and discernment for our community to stop, slow down, and look around.
May God be praised as we look to love others because God first loved us.
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

NEWS
Tues. Oct. 11 is like a FRIDAY Stay with me on this one, but to make sure we cover all the academic subjects for an equal amount of time in the school year, there will be a few "pretend" or "adjustment" days in our school calendar this year.
So... this Tues. Oct 11 will be "like" a Friday but ONLY in terms of the class schedule for the day. Subs will still be served for lunch on Tuesday as usual, however the CLASSES that normally happen on Friday will happen on Tuesday. At the end of the week, the classes that normally happen on Friday will happen AGAIN on Friday. It's like having 2 Fridays in a week schedule-wise.
Also... if your child normally has gym or music on a Friday - don't forget to send those gym clothes or instruments (including recorders).
This day switch will NOT affect activities outside the curriculum like: Dance & Tambourine Club or Piano Lessons.
If you are confused, please contact the office for clarification: office@jkcs-oakville.org or (905) 829-8048 x0
A special email was also sent out to our Kindergarten parents because this change means that our PART-TIME kindergarten students WILL COME TO SCHOOL ON TUES. OCT. 11 (These are the students that normally only come to school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.)
Welcome Kask & Saufl Families A very special and warm welcome to our two newest families who began with us this week. Welcome Ove & Laire Kask! Welcome James & Diane Saufl!
We hope you will feel welcomed into our JKCS family, make some new friends, and make some fabulous memories here! God bless!
Robotics Program is Switched On Thank you to all the parents and kids who came out to the Robotics Workshop this past Wednesday evening. Murray Buckler of Children's Technology Workshop led the evening and provided great information and "playtime" with some cool robotics. As a result, we have many families who have expressed an interest an after-school Robotics program.
Starting the week of October 17, we plan to start a six-week session of Robotics. It will be an after-school activity that will last for two hours, starting at 3:45 pm and ending at 5:45 pm.
While we are still trying to determine the day of the week, it will most likely be offered on a Wednesday, possibly a Tuesday, or perhaps even both days depending on the number of participants. The cost of the six week session is $180.00 per student. Students in grade 3 and up are welcomed to attend. If you would like to sign up your child(ren), please let Mrs. Schuurman know via e-mail at pschuurman@jkcs-oakville.org. by Oct. 14th At this time, priority will be given to those who attended the workshop on Wednesday as well as those who indicated their interest with Mrs. Schuurman. However, there is still room for more participants.
Let's Start a LEGO Club!Wanted: LEGO, lots of LEGO!
We would like to begin a LEGO club this year and are looking for donations of LEGO. If you have any LEGO that you no longer need, please send it to Resource Centre, with your child, as soon as possible. Thanks!
Extra Volunteer Help Our new GIFTS program is already running well and supporting the foundation of not only our academics, sports and community as a whole but, each other. A HUGE "Thank You" to all our participating parents!
We have already noticed as we implement this new GIFTS system, that we may still need some additional bodies for very popular activities.
When and if we do have additional needs for volunteer time, we'll post these needs in the Parent Update Newsletter.
Here's the first one: Currently, if you have a child in Gr. 1 through Gr. 4 and would like to spend sometime with them (and the other children in their class) reading in the classroom during the afternoon, once a month please let our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Tina Rizzuto-Willan know at: volunteer@jkcs-oakville.org We will happy to find you a cozy corner to share in a love for reading!
Our Sr. Girls Soccer Team Rocks!
Great job to the Senior Girls Soccer Team who competed in two great tournaments last week! A special thanks goes out to the grade six girls, who played in the Christian Schools Tournament on Wednesday. On Thursday, the girls competed in the PSAA tournament, tying two of their games and winning three. At the end of the day, we finished 7th out of 14 teams. Way to go, girls! Thanks for a great season.

Senior Kindergarten – Mrs. Bosch
We had a terrific trip to Chudleigh's Apple Farm! Can you believe the students picked 185 apples from the orchard? We discovered there is a 5 pointed star (made of seeds) in the middle of each apple, just like the 5 petals of an apple blossom. God's creation is amazing! We can't wait to bake some treats with our apples on Oct. 21 (from 9:15-10:15). If you would like to come and bake your favourite apple recipe with a small group of students, can you please send me an email? Thanks!
Monday: Happy Thanksgiving! Tuesday: School for everyone, including the part-time students, VIP of the week: Ellen Friday: Word cards due (Cc/Kk, Ee)We 2:30

Grade 1a - Mrs. Reckman We've had a week full of thankfulness in grade 1A, leading up to the Thanksgiving weekend! We've also been focusing on using good manners, and showing respect to each other. This week's memory verse is helping us remember that when we show respect to each other it makes God happy! Discuss this topic around the dinner table and see what manners your child can tell you and show you. Prepare to be impressed...we have very polite and respectful students in grade 1A!
Creation Studies: We're beginning a unit called "God Shows Us How to Build", in which we'll learn about building structures. We're looking for loans or donations to help out with this unit -- if you have a bucket of Lego, K'nex, blocks, or another type of "building" material at home that you wouldn't mind sending in, please email me to let me know! We had an exciting time this week taking gypsum and adding water and getting sidewalk chalk. God must of thought of children when He created this substance! We sure had an enjoyable time drawing with our chalk outside!
This month we will be looking at structure that God created. We will take a look to how He created things and try to create some things ourselves. This week we learned that “though every house is built by someone, God is the builder of everything!” We also discovered that structures have a job or a function, and are made from shapes. They must be strong!
From now on your spelling, reading words and memory work will no longer be printed in the parent update. Please look for the reading them on your sheet in your child’s folder. Please bring in clean and dry recyclable materials. We will continue to make our creations at a center in our room.
Thank you to all of you who brought in a purple duo tangs.
October 19: Scholastics flyers were sent home. If you wish to order they are due back on Wednesday. Poems: Please remember to work on your child’s poem with her/him. Due to our poetry memorization we will not have a memory work this week. Word Wall Sheet: if your child brings home a word wall sheet that does not have a stamp on it, it needs to be corrected or completed. Please assist your child to either complete or correct the work. You do not need to return this sheet to me.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving as you take time to reflect on God’s goodness to us.
