JKCS PARENT UPDATE

Dear Visitor
PONDERINGS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Sept. 30, 2011
Tomorrow is a new month. Can you believe it? Where has the time gone? By now we trust that many of the new routines and procedures have settled in.
Along with a new month comes a new verse with a focus around our school theme of love. The month of October is dedicated to manners. Next Wednesday, we will focus our Spirit Day assembly around the theme of manners as a way of showing respect and love to one another.
That focus reminds me of a few recent situations. Last week, I was entering a mall with some of my family members. The person who entered the mall before us held the door open for us. This past weekend, I went down the stairs at Webster’s Falls and noticed people waiting for me as I was going up the stairs. They wanted to ensure that there was enough room for us to pass each other without knocking into one another. I thanked them. During my Saturday morning walk, I noticed many people who returned my greeting of, “Good morning”, as I tried to get the exercise my body needs.
Each of those encounters reminded me of how those actions and words conveyed a “love” and “respect” for who I am as a person. We are going to devote the month of October to remind our students that we need to love one another by demonstrating our manners.
What kinds of things will we talk about? Here there are in no particular order:
- Use words like please, thank you, you’re welcome, pardon, and excuse me.
- When you are talking to someone, be sure to look at their eyes.
- Meet and greet guests politely both at home and school.
- Introduce yourself.
- Walk in the halls and on the front sidewalk and pass people to the right.
- When walking through a door, look behind you to see if you can hold the door open for the next person.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Be friendly and smile.
- Wait until conversations are finished before talking to the individuals.
- Use table manners.
- Be polite.
- Demonstrate respect to everyone.
That is quite a list! We will work hard to teach and model these behaviours as we focus on what is means to show our manners. May I ask you to re-inforce those manners at home as well? I have found in the past, that when our students receive a consistent message from home and school, they acquire these skills quickly.
May October be a month in which we follow the message of 1 Peter 2:17: “Show your respect to everyone.” I am looking forward to it! As you visit the school, be sure to notice the manners that our found in our students and staff!
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma
Principal

NEWS
Sr. Boys are Soccer CHAMPIONS!
CONGRATULATIONS! to our Senior Boys who brought home the Soccer Championship last night in the final game of the Christian School League Tournament.
It was a tremendously exciting week in sports for our soccer teams this past week. Our Senior Boys team participated in two tournaments: the Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) on Tuesday, and the Toronto area Christian Schools tournament on Wednesday.
The PSAA involved 14 teams. Games were played with a "seven players verses seven players" format. We played very well in our round-robin tournament where scores had a one or two point differentiation. We won several games that day, including one in which Jeff Lau scored three points. It was an excellent demonstration of skill and team work.
The Christian Schools tournament used a "eleven players vs eleven players" format. It was a wonderful, sunny day --- and a memorable one, too! In this tournament, we had a nail-biting semi-final match against Brampton where we were down to a sudden death penalty kick situation. They scored 1 out of 5 shots; we scored 1 out of 5 shots. Then, the sixth shot was missed by the Brampton player. It was up to our sixth shooter if we would win the game or not. Gaby Youssef came up with the most exciting kick, placing a shot in the bottom left corner! On to the finals we went! We faced a team to whom we had already lost earlier in the day. We played Holland Marsh in the final championship match. Daniel Seo scored three goals in a 4-1 championship win. Peter Blaszczyk and Marc Monette set up some excellent plays; the defensive lines were up to the challenge. Great playing! ALL our players were encouraging and resilient! A special mention has to go to Antoni Dalewski whose exceptional goal-keeping kept us in the game in every single match. Great team effort -- Great team result! Congratulations, boys!

EVENTS
Manners at Thanksgiving Meal
We are heading into an exciting week for our school! On Wed., Oct. 5 at our assembly, we will be introduced to this month's theme of manners. This is also the first time we will meet together broken into our various tribes (each tribe includes students from every grade level.)
During this assembly, your child will be picking the name of another tribe member out of a hat. They will then pack a special lunch for that person for our shared Thanksgiving meal on Friday, Oct. 7.
Here's what our "Thanksgiving Meal" will look like on Friday Oct. 7:
- Everyone will gather in the gym and celebrate Thanksgiving by eating together in tribe groups. Everyone will bring along the special lunch for the person that they had picked on Wednesday.
- During this assembly, we will be focusing on good eating manners.
- Each tribe will be sitting on our maroon tablecloths and the Grade 8 leaders will have "set" their tables in preparation for the arrival of their group.
Be sure to ask your child on Wednesday what name your they picked and start planning something special for that child!
When packing the lunch for the Thanksgiving Meal, please remember:
- Use a disposible bag (paper or plastic)
- Include only nut-free items!
- Do not include any milk items (yogurt, cheese etc.) as we have a number of milk allergies.
- Write the name of the person you are packing the lunch for, clearly on the front
- Set out YOUR child's Sunday Best clothes to wear at the Thanksgiving Assembly on Friday! (no uniforms)

This week the class is completing a poster of the layers of the atmosphere. Band: Students have received their practice sheets. These will be due on Monday, October 3, 2011, and a minimum of 150 minutes for September is expected. Don’t wait until the last week to practice! Parents, please note that you need to sign the practice sheet before it is handed in. Geography: On Friday, October 7, students will have a map quiz on selected countries within Africa. Be sure to study! French: Oct. 3 French Spelling Test Students will be receiving weekly spelling tests as well as short written grammar exercises. Students should be preparing for their spelling tests during the week so that they are well prepared to write the precise spellings of their words, including correct accents. Math: We are having a test Friday on unit 1 - Number Relationships. Literature: Our unit on poetry focuses on the work of Canadian poet Pauline Johnson. Poetry Project: A poetry project has been given out; please ensure your child looks carefully at the project sheet and what is required. Book Report: We have been assigned a book report which is due on Wednesday. Please check the assignment sheet to view the requirements.
