Cynthia Durham, Parent of SK and Grade 2 Students, Hailey and Joshua
I was recently asked why I spend some of my extra time at JKCS rather than doing something else. On reflection, I honestly believe that my family and I have gotten more out of this time and service than the school ever could. However, it doesn’t match the joy I feel knowing that the Senior Kindergarten kids are using their imagination and playing games with the play dough I made; or the feeling that I have made a difference by photocopying worksheets so a teacher is freed up to spend more time helping a student with their reading or math.
I know my children feel a greater connection to JKCS and the school community. This isn’t just a place where they come for school. They see that JKCS is important to our entire family. I believe that our family and our school have become so much more, simply by giving a little.
Tina Rizzuto-Willan Parent of Grade 1 Student, Carter
My volunteer job as Class Parent this year has been a wonderful gift to me and my son. The first year at a new school can be daunting; first time staying full day, first recess, first packed lunch...these transitions were big for both Carter and me! Having the opportunity to help out at the school including being a reading mom has given both of us the opportunity to ease into these ‘firsts’ together. We have grown and become connected to a new community. It was apparent that my involvement empowered Carter and boosted his self-esteem, it is also instilling in him the value of giving and caring.
