Experience the Journey
Dear Visitor,
"Belonging is important to us all. We all want to be part of a family, community, club, organization, or country. Being part of such units means that we are included as part of the whole. In a school, children benefit from belonging, as they learn to develop empathy and love, make real life decisions, and gain educationally." (Edith van der Boom) It is our hope that as you ponder the pages of our 2nd edition of "The Journey" that you will experience a sense of belonging. Welcome!
We invite you to journey with us June 4th for our 11th JKCS Golf Tournament. More information including details on registration later in this newsletter or click here.
Join Us As We Journey - Spring 2011George Petrusma, Principal Much has happened since the first edition of "The Journey" newsletter was published in the fall. Our school year has seen its share of highlights as we have enjoyed making connections with our community. Let me highlight three of them.
It was very encouraging to see so many grandfriends come through our front door on Friday, November 5th. Our annual Grandfriends Day saw many good conversations, much good food, and many touching moments of grandparents connecting with their grandchildren. This day certainly is a highlight in the school's yearly calendar.
Many of our alumni came back to us and were an integral part of our first Grade 7 and 8 High School Information Evening held on Wednesday, December 8th. We counted over twenty alumni at that event. Our alumni came to do more than connect with each other. Many of them served as experts for their various high schools as grade 7 and 8 parents were interested to find out more about the transition to high school.

One BodyEdith H. van der Boom, Resource Centre Each person is God’s unique creation, made for a specific purpose to serve him and bring him glory. As educators here at JKCS, it is our privilege to instill in each student the understanding that they have an important role to play as part of the body of Christ. We have the opportunity to educate students and encourage each one to develop and use their unique gifts and abilities, which God has entrusted to each.
It is the things that we share in common that make us human, and it is the way that we differ from one another that makes us individuals (Tomlinson, 2001). Differentiated instruction is a teaching strategy that emphasizes the fact that children have things in common as well as differences. It seeks to address the diversity of learners in elementary and secondary classrooms, reflecting one’s mission to provide education to all the members of the body of Christ. Differentiated instruction adapts instruction to meet student’s varying readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles. The teacher proactively plans a variety of ways for students to “get at” and express learning through content, process and product.

Expressing the Love of GodBetty Panza, Servant Team Our third year of “Servant Team” here at JKCS continues to be an adventure. Whether it’s cheering for runners raising money for wells in Africa, raking leaves for families affected by cancer, taking breakfast orders and refilling coffee at Kerr Street, painting soup bowls, or simply removing tags and price stickers from donated items, you can count on this team of students from grades six through eight to do it with enthusiasm and love – even early on a Saturday morning.
The Servant Team has had the privilege to work alongside the ministries at Kerr Street, Sew on Fire, Home Suite Hope, and Run for Wells, amongst others this year. Through the work accomplished at these events, the students at JKCS have shown God’s love to thousands of people all over the world and have learned more about the love of Jesus in their own hearts in the process.
Should you be interested in journeying with the Servant Team, you can meet one of these enthusiastic young people at Boston Pizza on June 14, where the Servant Team will be serving our school community as they eat together in order to raise money for JKCS. Hope to see you there!

Yummy snacks will be served! They do not need to pre-register, we welcome all Christian families to attend!

Golf Tournament June 4th & On-Line Auction May 2nd - June 3rd
Once again this year the John Knox family has shown why we are all proud to be a part of such a vibrant and generous community.
We celebrate that fact that through the generosity of our JKCS community the full $55,000 need of our Bursary Fund recipients has been met. Our efforts throughout our school year: the Chip’n in campaign, Children’s Christmas Cards, Annual Fund campaign and Bowl-a-thon; were just some of the opportunities where our community showed support.
We are excited to announce our final fundraising event of the 2010-2011 school year.
May 2nd – June 3rd
1st “Chip’n In” On-Line Auction
Saturday, June 4th
11th John Knox Christian School
Golf Tournament & Silent Auction
Funds raised will be used for the operational needs of JKCS, and in particular the replenishment of the Building Fund; significantly depleted as a result of unforeseen water damage repaired in 2010. In addition, 10% of our profits from our tournament day will be donated to KidsFest, supporting our community and the educational needs of children.
You don’t have to be on the golf course to “chip in”. Golfers and non-golfers among us are invited and encouraged to review the generous auction donations of our community on-line and BID, BID, BID!
Then join us June 4th on the golf course. Some on-line auction items will be available for final bids at this event only! Even more, it’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a morning of golf with your friends and family, and to introduce the joys of John Knox to those who aren’t already a part of our John Knox family. Thank you for participating and for returning the forms highlighting your interest and participation.

Grade 5 Students Shocked That They Are Tax-Payers!Melissa Semplonius, Grade 5 Teacher The grade five students at JKCS have demonstrated an enthusiasm and love for government since the very beginning of our unit in September. They have had the opportunity to learn through many different experiences including a field trip to Queen's Park, a visit from Kevin Flynn, our local MPP; staging their own campaigns; and, of course, every student's favourite; lectures and tedious note-taking during social studies class.
Perhaps the most exciting and memorable moment for many of the grade five was meeting the Ontario Minister of Finance, Dwight Duncan. To the shock of many students, Mr. Duncan informed them that they are, in fact, tax-payers.

First Annual JKCS Pastor's LunchJennifer Bergner, Director of Communications This February, about thirty of our students invited their pastor/church leaders to join them for lunch here at John Knox Christian School. We had a very enthusiastic response from pastors, many of whom had not visited our wonderful school before.
As our students represent almost 70 different congregations, seeing over 30 pastors together from the Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga and Toronto areas, was a fantastic visual representation of the ecumenical Christian make-up of our school.
